Research in numerous areas has documented the link between increased access to health care, including preventive health care, and health status. This paper presents findings from a national, random-digit dial survey of over 74,000 households conducted in 2012-2013 to examine the relationship between levels of access to health care and use of preventive care and health status among people reporting paralysis in the United States. Survey items in these domains were taken from normed, standardized instruments including the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the American Community Survey. The definition of paralysis used in the survey is a functional one based on the functional definition of disability by the World Health Organization.
