Bianca Lopez-Bakke, MPH , Prevention Department, BOOM!Health, Bronx, NY
BOOM! Health delivers a full range of prevention, behavioral health and wellness services to the hardest to reach communities in the Bronx. Our sexual health education programs have an innovative approach to engage youth;  we maintain a strong and vibrant youth component because from the very beginning of our relationship and encourage open communication in a non-judgmental environment. We provide a safe space where Black and Latina girls are allowed to feel a sense of ownership over the program and offer guidance regarding program activity. The Peer Leadership program introduces the participants to advanced sexual health/substance abuse information, effective communication skills, self-exploration, goal development, identifying and holding on to personal values, crisis intervention, the value of family and education. The girls are presented with various topics that they will likely encounter throughout their lives: racism, sexism, environmental and health discrimination, and barriers to education and employment. The oral presentation will include an overview of our peer leadership program components; discuss youth engagement strategies and the outcomes in reducing HIV/STIs and Teen Pregnancy rates among our participants. Public health professionals who attend this session will have an increased understanding of how to implement youth friendly services  and the importance of utilizing a peer model of health promotion and education with the target population.
