Behavioral and social risk factors among childhood sexual abuse survivors: A review
To provide an updated, comprehensive overview of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) for researchers and public health professionals by examining maladaptive behavioral and social risk behaviors associated with a history of CSA.
Methodology
Studies were located that examined various sexual health risks, psychological health outcomes, and other maladaptive risk behaviors of individuals with a history of CSA.
Results:
Prevalence rates of CSA often differ across studies due to methodological differences, populations, and the stigmatization of reporting CSA. Results reported associations between a history of CSA and increased risk of sexual risk behaviors, sexual aversion, intimate partner violence, alcohol and substance use and dependency, and psychological disorders.
Conclusion:
Results highlight most the recent literature focused on associations between CSA and adverse health behavior outcomes. Understanding the current and various health disparities associated with CSA can aid public health workers, practitioners, and researchers in targeting behavioral outcomes to decrease adverse effects of CSA. Future studies should consider the numerous outcomes associated with CSA and intervene to improve health outcomes in this at risk population
