Define it! Design it! Do it! A Community Action Model to Address Disparities, Promote Health and Create Positive Social Experiences in Diverse Communities
Tuesday, November 18, 2014
: 3:30 PM - 3:50 PM
Obesity is a national epidemic with wide consequences and cost to America’s health and productivity. Community level interventions are gaining popularity as cost efficient measures to reduce obesity and improve health. In this interesting and interactive presentation, a health promotion leader will link three valuable tools discussed by a panel of experts that promote healthy, active living in their communities. First, participants will participate in a “Better Blocks” tutorial, where they will learn how to conduct a neighborhood assessment, a framework to identify “hot spots” and determine solutions that help lay the foundation for living a active, safe and healthy lifestyles. Next they will be guided through “Walking Paths,” a distance markers program using a fun online tool to design free and safe routes in communities that promotes physical activity, brings neighbors together and provides valuable history lessons. Participants will also be introduced to “Healthy Places,” an innovative program that produces community health ambassadors, promotes active living and builds relationships. This session will introduce tools that encourage people to connect with others, creating a healthy social experience and support system. At the end of the session, participants will be able to define and apply steps in an environmental assessment process, test an online tool to create customized paths in their communities, and learn how to become health advocates in their neighborhoods.
