Addressing the Impact of Lead Exposure on Child Development and Educational Outcomes
Prevention of childhood lead poisoning can have a significant effect on children's success in learning and life. Neurological and epidemiological research studies provide conclusive evidence that even at low dose, lead exposure adversely affects young children’s developing brains, intelligence, learning, and behavior. New research exploring the specific effects of lead on educational outcomes and critical ages when neurotoxic effects are likely to be expressed will be presented. These studies demonstrate that the connection between rising blood lead and poorer educational outcomes remains true for children with blood lead levels (BLL) only 1-2 micrograms per deciliter above the 2009-2010 geometric mean BLL for US children 1-5 years old.
The session will describe the regulatory framework for early intervention and special education services. Participants will learn of specific actions that state health and education agencies, childhood lead poisoning prevention programs, pediatricians and others can take to connect lead-exposed children with effective early intervention, educational, and related services.
