Youth are an under-utilized, over-looked asset in the majority of our communities, particularly in the realm of health issues affecting youth (e.g. high school dropout, teen pregnancy). In this session, we will hear from two youth leaders that are making a difference in their communities. We will introduce the frameworks of Positive Youth Development (PYD) and Community Asset Mapping (CAM) to understand how youth-led public health efforts differ from the default approaches, which tend to range from no room for involvement to token-level involvement with no real decision-making capacity.  After the youth have presented, we will also discuss barriers to youth leadership, with suggestions for how participants can address these barriers in their programs and communities.

Learning Areas:

Implementation of health education strategies, interventions and programs
Planning of health education strategies, interventions, and programs
Program planning
Systems thinking models (conceptual and theoretical models), applications related to public health

Learning Objectives:
Compare youth engagement from needs-based and asset-based lens, looking at how programs that use these two approaches differ Formulate strategies for increasing the capacity for youth leadership in public health efforts Analyze barriers to increasing youth leadership in public health efforts, looking at how these barriers can be addressed.
