In the past decade, prescription drug abuse, misuse, and diversion have led to an epidemic of overdose-related deaths across the United States. We have embarked on a joint effort in conjunction with another program to catalogue and analyze common legal strategies related to the prevention of deaths from prescription drug overdose. The laws include both statutes and regulations across all 50 states and the District of Columbia relating to:

•             Doctor shopping

•             Pain management clinics

•             Tamper-resistant prescription forms

•             Prescription limits

•             Proof of identification

•             Physical examinations

•             Prescription drug overdose emergencies

This session will describe our assessment of all seven types of legal strategies that relate to prescription drug misuse, abuse, and overdose. Specific examples of states’ current laws will also be provided. Additionally, this session will include a brief summary of the evidence of harm and effectiveness related to each law type, while pointing out gaps in current evaluation of the laws.
