Building on work that assessed the scientific merit of various alternatives to monitoring surveillance for people with paralysis in the U.S. (Fox, et al., 2008), a national, random-digit dial survey of over 70,000 households was initiated in 2012. The goal  of the survey was to understand the health and quality of life of people with paralysis, comparing them to people with other types of physical disabilities and those without disabilities. Items used on the survey were taken from normed, validated surveys including the American Community Survey, BRFSS and others. Survey findings show that people with paralysis-causing conditions  such as stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis face significant disparities in areas such as health, employment, economic status, housing and  education.
