Raise 5 Project's utilization of evidenced-based HIV prevention programs for African-American college students
SISTA and NIA are multi-session evidenced-based HIV prevention interventions for young, African-American adults. Safe in the City is a one-session intervention for all ethnic groups and was used as a comparison intervention. Grounded in social cognitive theory and ethnic and gender pride, SISTA and NIA have been demonstrated to reduce risky sexual behavior and increase HIV awareness among African-American women and African-American men who have sex with women, respectively. This presentation will explore the challenges and successes related to the implementation and receptivity to SISTA, NIA, and Safe in the City among African-American college students. Of particular focus will be the ways in which facilitators can adapt intervention materials to be more contemporarily and contextually relevant while maintaining program fidelity. It will also review issues surrounding recruitment and retention of participants which included posting flyers, recruiting at edutainment events, mass emails to African- American students and snowball techniques. As trained SISTA and NIA facilitators, the presenters will inform this presentation with their own personal experiences and reflections. Thirteen cohorts of SISTA (128 participants) and nine cohorts of NIA (74 participants) have been implemented. SISTA and NIA participants engaged in activities such as condom demonstrations, role plays, and personal sharing that emphasized their sexual safety and health. Participant engagement varied across cohorts and sessions; however, a majority of participants completed SISTA and NIA and actively engaged in discussions and activities. Participants in Safe in the City watched a video followed by a guided discussion.
