Richmond is one of the first cities in the country to develop a comprehensive general plan element that addresses the link between public health and city services.  The development of the Richmond General Plan 2030 involved over 2,000 residents and multiple community organizations and system partners. As the Community Health and Wellness Element of the Richmond General Plan 2030 was in the early stages of implementation a new school based (place based) community engagement strategy in neighborhoods facing health disparities was developed. This linguistically and culturally responsive community engagement approach has been an essential component in the development of the cities Health in All Policies (HiAP) strategy.  The HiAP strategy will be how the city’s general plan which focuses on creating a healthy city will be operationalized. The poster will focus on concrete examples of best practices and challenges to community engagement over a four year initiative and how public health, equity, institutionalized racism, and community social stressors concepts and themes were introduced. The data and community narratives from the engagement exercises are being used to develop policy interventions and built environment improvements in their neighborhoods.
