This session will focus on evidence-based health communication and social marketing principles in the development of messages with strong motivational appeal for public health policy and advocacy.  A range of internal and external communication methods and examples will be presented and demonstrated.  Case examples will be used from different policy and advocacy campaigns.  Participants will be provided with a template to use for planning their own local policy initiative using a variety of communication vehicles and will begin developing their own plans and communication messages to be completed and used when they return to their state and local community.  The communication session will complement the other sessions in this institute. Pre and post session evaluation will include knowledge gained, self-efficacy in the development and implementation of effective communication for policy making, and intentions to use some or all of the strategies and tactics learning in the Institute when they return home to the state and local community.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have been a public health educator for over 40 years working with government, community health organizations, private health foundations, healthcare organizations and in academic public health programs. I have extensive experience leading public health policy and advocacy initiatives on a range of public health topics including tobacco control, physical activity, preventive health services, and injury prevention at the federal, state and local level and teach a graduate course in Public Health Policy and Advocacy.
