Jennifer R. Warren, PhD , Department of Communication, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ
This presentation will provide an overarching conceptual framework for why communication processes are integral to the act of community engagement; and in this case integral to the act of community engagement with severely underserved groups. In the process definitions of relevant terms (i.e., community engagement, community engagement principles, values, ethics, communication) are outlined. An in-depth discussion of the transactional model of communication is offered with links to community engaged practices, including entry into a community, building partnerships, collaboration related to goals, intervention development, dissemination and sustainability. It is important at the outset of the course to orient participants theoretically to community engagement and communication and the relation thereof before moving on to the next stage in the course. Examples will be provided to bring the theory to life.
