Jennifer R. Warren, PhD , Department of Communication, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ
Building and maintaining relationships in community engagement are founded on collaborating with community members. Distinct individuals and groups must develop and sustain relationships to achieve a common goal or set of goals. Communication is integral to these processes. Without knowledge of communication processes and skills in effective communication, well-meaning participants can hit a brick wall and suffer lost partnerships. It is critical that individuals seeking to successfully engage diverse communities place an emphasis on understanding factors that impact communication processes and identify strategies that support different perspectives. These presentation uses the social ecological model popular in public health, to help participants learn how communication impacts partnerships at multiple levels.  The ecological model stresses the interaction between factors within and across all levels of community engagement.  They will become familiar with the individual factors, interpersonal factors, community/group factors, organizational/institutional factors, and policy/normative factors that impact communicating processes in community engagement. Course participants will learn to navigate partnerships based on a flexible, genuine, and self-confident approach with working with severely challenge communities.
