This presentation will provide participants with overview of the day. It will also provide an orientation of the course content from the perceptive of a community member who is also a long time community activist. The goal is to situate the importance of communication in community engagement. The presenter will use lay understandings as well as provide philosophical rationale for taking this course.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have worked on a number of community-based collaborations as an organizer, health education and health promotion coordinator, data review and dissemination specialist, and community liaison. Having worked with communities of color, new immigrant, refugee communities, and diverse socioeconomic communities of place, I can speak to the importance of context, cultural sensitivity and historical exchange that impact relationship building.
