Practical modeling: Exploring models in ISIS and Zeke

142nd APHA Annual Meeting and Exposition (November 15 - November 19, 2014): http://www.apha.org/events-and-meetings/annual
Saturday, November 15, 2014 : 2:15 PM - 3:20 PM

Eric Lofgren, MSPH, PhD , Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
Using the theory and concepts laid out in the previous presentation, we provide a hands-on exploration of model implementation. Using web-based programs developed by the presenters, participants can explore and compare the models introduced during the learning institute using a program called ‘Zeke’. Additionally, they can implement more sophisticated agent-based models for their own research questions, including custom disease dynamics, interventions, risk groups etc. using ‘ISIS’, a user-friendly web frontend to the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute’s high performance epidemiological modeling software.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Formulate and implement a model of their own research question
  2. Assess the impact of varying model structure and parameter values
  3. Evaluate the benefits and costs of complex model designs.
