Thomas LaVeist, PhD , Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD
In the United States of America, in the year 2014, African Americans live sicker and die younger than any other ethnic group in the nation. Why is this happening? In this feature documentary THE SKIN YOU’RE IN, Our Town Films and Johns Hopkins Public Health researcher Dr. Thomas LaVeist will investigate this disturbing phenomenon: the astonishing disparity between Black and White health in America, find out why it exists and discover what can be done about it. The film will take viewers on a journey of exploration of this problem. We will talk to leading experts and researchers from around the country who will explain the problems and what can be done. But mostly we will see the problem first hand in the everyday lives of African American families. By putting a face on this problem, we hope to show that this it is not just about statistics and surveys but about real people - people that can be helped through education and knowledge about who they are and where they came from so that together we can look for clues to its roots and try and find lasting answers. Finally, the film will introduce viewers to everyday people who have found ways to create solutions. THE SKIN YOU’RE IN will demonstrate that health inequalities can be eliminated. We can choose to not to accept the fate of premature death.
