NOLA FOR LIFE, Mayor Mitch Landrieu's Comprehensive Murder Reduction Strategy
This presentation will outline ways in which the City of New Orleans has implemented strategies to change the city’s social, physical, and societal environment in order to foster resilient communities. These include the following:
- Social environment – These efforts include targeted programs like CeaseFire Central City, which seeks to interrupt violence and change social norms, as well as “Flip the Script,” a bold public awareness campaign, and Mayor Landrieu’s outspoken advocacy about the importance of addressing urban gun violence.
- Physical environment – These efforts include NOLA FOR LIFE Days, which focus the activities of City departments and volunteers on a park and the surrounding hotspot neighborhood, as well as storefront improvement projects and other activities to improve the built environment in NOLA FOR LIFE target neighborhoods.
Societal environment – These efforts include policy changes, such as “Ban the Box,” as well as innovative ways in which City departments such as sanitation and public works have been called upon to play a part in NOLA FOR LIFE.

Since taking office, I have worked to make the city safer through NOLA FOR LIFE, a comprehensive murder reduction strategy. I ahve been an outspoken advocate for the public health approach to addressing violence. Prior to becoming Mayor, I served as Louisiana’s Lieutenant Governor and in Louisiana’s House of Representatives.
