Mayor Mitch Landrieu , City of New Orleans, New Orleans, LA
New Orleans is a city of neighborhoods – where you’re from matters, not just for your  identify, but for your life outcomes.  A small number of neighborhoods comprising 23% of the city’s population account for 39% of murders.  As a result, the City of New Orleans has adopted strategies that change the environment in which young people grow up and live as part of NOLA FOR LIFE, Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s murder reduction strategies.

This presentation will outline ways in which the City of New Orleans has implemented strategies to change the city’s social, physical, and societal environment in order to foster resilient communities.  These include the following:

  • Social environment – These efforts include targeted programs like CeaseFire Central City, which seeks to interrupt violence and change social norms, as well as “Flip the Script,” a bold public awareness campaign, and Mayor Landrieu’s outspoken advocacy about the importance of addressing urban gun violence.
  • Physical environment – These efforts include NOLA FOR LIFE Days, which focus the activities of City departments and volunteers on a park and the surrounding hotspot neighborhood, as well as storefront improvement projects and other activities to improve the built environment in NOLA FOR LIFE target neighborhoods.

Societal environment – These efforts include policy changes, such as “Ban the Box,” as well as innovative ways in which City departments such as sanitation and public works have been called upon to play a part in NOLA FOR LIFE.
