OSNAP was developed by the Harvard School of Public Health Prevention Research Center. The online course consists of 7 interactive sessions, featuring Program Practice Assessments, Policy Assessments, and Action Planning on www.osnap.org, as well as, discussion board dialogue and instant feedback through quizzes. The key messages of OSNAP are built upon these 10 goals:
-Provide all children with at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.
-Offer 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity 3 times per week.
-Do not serve sugary drinks.
-Do not allow sugary drinks to be brought in during program time.
-Offer water as a drink at snack every day.
-Offer a fruit or vegetable option every day at snack.
-When serving grains (like bread, crackers, and cereals), serve whole grains.
-Do not serve foods with trans fat.
-Limit computer and digital device time to homework or instructional only.
-Eliminate use of commercial broadcast and cable TV and movies.
Each online session guides staff through major components of OSNAP, simple ways to improve practices and policies, stories from after-school staff, and explanation of OSNAP tools. The sessions are: Session 1-OSNAP Overview, Session 2-Assess Your Program Practices, Session 3-Program Practice Strategies, Session 4-Action Planning, Session 5-Program Policy, Session 6-Program Supportive Practices, and Session 7-Program Sustainability.
