Jeff Schwartz, MCP , Broad Community Connections, New Orleans, LA
Jeff Schwartz, an urban planner who returned to New Orleans to help with post-Katrina recovery, launched Broad Community Connection (BCC) in 2008 to revitalize the Broad Street corridor by promoting the economic, residential and cultural development of its diverse surrounding neighborhoods. BCC’s ReFresh Project, launched in New Orleans in May 2013, is the first development in the nation to house healthy food retail options under the same roof with a broad range of organizations and programs designed to promote positive health outcomes. Although a major goal is to offer better food options, the partners recognized the need to anchor economic and community development.
