Abstract:

With more than thirty-four percent of adults in America being considered obese, the burden of obesity upon our healthcare system and the population nationwide has been well documented. There have been many efforts to curb this public health issue, but very few have successfully created behavior change- especially for those who are morbidly obese. Bariatric surgery, as an intervention with post-surgery follow up care, has been shown to demonstrate early as well as durable weight loss for patients that follow the proposed course of action. This weight loss provides a direct solution to improvements in patients’ health such as decreased rates of sleep apnea, asthma, blood pressure and cholesterol.

Description:

Second Chance: A Weight Management Intervention for the Extremely Overweight was developed as a deliverable for a Documentaries in Public Health course in efforts to teach students how to translate and present evidence based research to a general audience. This film explores the importance of providing a comprehensive and holistic approach to a bariatric surgery program. Though the surgery has many direct benefits associated with it, the real success comes from patients who are able to embrace a whole new lifestyle developed by a team of health professionals. Having access to a nutritionist, physical therapist and psychologist during this weight loss process are all vital components of long-term success. The film highlights two individuals and their journey after participating in a weight management intervention program designed around bariatric surgery.
