A trauma-informed approach promotes conditions that support an individual’s recovery. Without a trauma-informed approach (TIA), an organization can unknowingly retraumatize the individuals it serves. To guide implementation of a TIA, SAMHSA has defined six key principles. The Trauma-Informed Approach video series highlights best practices in the adoption and practical application of these SAMHSA TIA principles at three geographically and programmatically diverse community programs. The series consists of three short videos: Conditions for Healing, Addressing Language and Culture, and A Community Case Study. These videos can serve as a resource for service providers exploring the adoption of TIA principles. The series can be used for in-service or other training programs for existing staff or higher education students, meetings between service providers, or education of policy makers and community members.

A Community Case Study highlights how Good Samaritan, a network of facilities serving individuals experiencing homelessness and  substance use disorders, in Santa Maria, CA, has taken a collaborative approach to a TIA. Good Samaritan recognized the prevalence of trauma in the lives of individuals in its programs. Many of them were receiving services from other organizations, including local police and county education, alcohol, drug, and mental health, probation, and child welfare services. Having been trained in providing a TIA, Good Samaritan began training these and other community organizations in how to implement and sustain a TIA. Good Samaritan reflects the TIA principle of collaboration and mutuality. Its community-wide partnerships promote shared understanding and decision-making between individuals and their service providers.
