Challenges to achieving health equity include the need for and expansion of disaggregated data collection. There is a translational gap for Asian Americans who experience different social, economic, cultural contexts and are often not reached by population-wide strategies. The NYU Center for the Study of Asian American Health has been working to address these challenges and have identified key areas towards our goal of addressing AA health disparities and achieving health equity for our communities. The key which are focused on community-based culturally tailored interventions and strategies include: 1) Applying a community-based participatory research framework; 2) Developing tailored and relevant data collection tools and interventions; 3) Using innovative methodologies for sampling, recruitment, and retention; and 4) Expanding data collection of social indicators that yield better understanding of trends in health status and outcomes as well as community strengths and protective factors.
