Transforming the way women see place using CHWs
involved health systems are seeing remarkable differences in normal birth weight, full-term
deliveries and infant mortality compared to the general public. The CHWs act as the primary
contact to work with women outside of the clinical setting because of the extensive trainings
around CHW competencies, trust building, and familiarity with community. Their work begins
with strategies to bring hope and help women learn to transform their circumstances such as
completing high school/GED, finding employment, learning self-advocacy, nutrition, etc.
Also include discussion on what we did to keep the CNNs “healthy and well” to continue to do this work.

I have over 21 years in public health with an extensive background in community based participatory research, outreach, education and training. I have participated in numerous research initiatives that focused on mobilizing CHW’s to address the social determinants of health. My goals are grounded in a desire to ensure a healthy life for all who live, work or play in the city of Detroit.
