Connecting New Orleans Children to Nature: The Role of the Parks

Healthy Parks, Healthy People US is a National Park Service initiative working to reintegrate human, environmental and ecological health into the mission of public parks and public lands. The initiative aims to employ holistic approaches to promoting health and wellbeing while sustainably managing our natural resources. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park partnered with the National Environmental Education Foundation to launch the Children and Nature: Rx for Outdoor Activity Initiative in New Orleans. This presentation will describe the implementation strategies, successes and lessons learned from this project which connects children ages 6-14 under the managed care of a physician, to four national park sites in the New Orleans metropolitan area.
