From the inception of the treaty, the United Nation’s Environmental Programme International Negotiations Committee focused on banning or limiting the use of specific mercury products to minimize their environmental impact globally.  The objective is to emphasize prevention and research to phase down the demand and use of all dental materials and their by-products, including dental amalgam. The oral health profession responded in consideration of the impact the treaty would have on public health, patient care and the environment. This presentation will describe that as advocates of oral and general health, the professional role is to emphasize the need for risk assessment, prevention, disease management and additional research on dental restorative materials.
