Social and economic factors play an ineluctable role in shaping the health of populations. In many ways all efforts to promote mental health are limited,  absent an effort to also improve the context that shapes mental illness.  This presentation will offer a framework that explains the central role of social and economic factors in the the production of behavioral health. The presentation will also explore how social and economic factors present a real mathematical limit to the improvement in behavioral health that is achievable through interventions focused only on individual-based approaches.
