The public health response to the Boston marathon bombings in 2013 demonstrated the value of networks and collaborative practices in disaster management. Effective health and psychological first aid (PFA) was given due to the coordinated activities of primary care providers, hospitals, ambulance services and other first responders, local, state, and Federal organizations, and citizens. Changes were made for the 2014 marathon based on lessons learned from 2013. Follow-up interviews with key providers document these improvements and how they were implemented in the field. Lessons learned are summarized.
