To drive system change through professional learning, ODPHP highlights case studies of innovative programs that are impacting multiple social determinants of health to improve quality and health outcomes for all Americans. One such case study is Florida International University’s NeighborhoodHelp™ program. Through this program students participate in a unique blend of classroom and field-based training that emphasizes the social determinants of health. As part of an interdisciplinary team that includes nursing, social work, and law students, medical students directly engage with a household in a medically underserved community throughout all four years of their medical education.

With a diverse network of 100+ community organizations, the NeighborhoodHelp™ program empowers households and students to work collaboratively to improve health outcomes and tackle the social determinants of health. This presentation will explore the program and its impact on health outcomes, while discussing how health professionals, community organizations, and academe can work together to implement a social determinants of health approach.
