Lead (Pb) concentration has been extensively researched in the Central Wetlands Unit (CWU), defined by a report from an ecological baseline studreport (EBS) as encompassing 30,000 acres in the area of St. Bernard and Orleans Parishes (Englande et al, 2012).  A testing site nearby, Violet Canal in Bayou Bienvenue, for example, has data collected from 15 years ago.  Compilation of this material could identify problem areas, which in turn could aid in reducing the amount of lead (Pb) being deposited in the CWU and its harmful effects to humans and aquatic life (Johanssen et al, 2013).  This paper aims to do this by locating scrap metal sites that are possibly causing diffuse pollution, or run-off, of lead (Pb) and identify further testing that needs to be done.  This paper will attempt to bring together a few sources of study on trace elements of lead (Pb) in this area, to better understand the effect this metal has on the Central Wetlands of Louisiana.

Learning Areas:

Environmental health sciences
Public health or related laws, regulations, standards, or guidelines

Learning Objectives:
Discuss the role of the heavy metal Pb (lead) in wetlands. Describe the procedure for assessing an area with Google earth and GIS.

Keyword(s): Water & Health, Environmental Health

Presenting author's disclosure statement:

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have been the principal of one school funded grant focusing on GIS and Pb (lead) in Bayou Bienvenue, Louisiana. Among my scientific interests has been the development of strategies for lessening the impact of diffuse pollution on the wetlands of Louisiana and Virginia.
