The active professional career of James Steele, DVM, MPH spanned 8 decades, remarkable as is its length is its breadth of coverage and innovation. At the core was connecting human and animal health as a continuum and, in turn, that linkage provided the building block of health and economic well-being.This presentation highlights aspects of his career-“in his own words” based on interviews with James Steele at age 98 recounting highlights, his maturation as a professional, founding the field of veterinary public health, and his constant appeal to science and the role of mentorships to grow the field to accelerate the advance  of  human and animal health both domestically and globally.

Learning Objectives:
Describe the needed background history on the creation and development of veterinary public health through James Steele own recounting. Explain the importance of twinning veterinary science and public health science as a foundation to advance population health in what James Steele defined as “One Health”. Identify key lessons learned as exemplified by the life work and contributions of James Steele as the founder of veterinary public health and the “One Health” movement.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: As a co-chair of the History Project I am knowledgeable of the topic. Currently, in the last 5 years, I have continued to review, collect, and synthesize the background and key aspects of through both research, conversation, and the benefit of directly tapping addition scholarly input from leaders in public health history. Having taught public health in my role as Professor at the School of Public Health, The University of Texas.
