This session will help the public health community understand the authority granted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate tobacco. FDA staff will describe actions taken by the FDA in the first five years of regulating tobacco products and preview future regulatory priorities. Attendees will learn about specific policy options that they can pursue and understand the different and specific ways in which they can collaborate with and inform FDA’s work.

Learning Objectives:
Explain FDAs Center for Tobacco Products’ (CTP) strategic priorities and CTPs vision for the regulation of tobacco products to help reduce the death and disease toll caused by tobacco use. Discuss the ways the public health community can engage with FDA to participate in tobacco product regulation. Identify opportunities to inform FDA action on tobacco to promote public health.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am the director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Tobacco Products. I have 30+ years of regulatory, legislative and communications experience working with federal and state health agencies on public health policy issues. I served as FDAs representative on tobacco issues involving Congress, public health groups and foreign governments. I also served as an official US delegate to the World Health Organization’s Working Group for the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
