Despite recent reductions in global infant and child morbidity and mortality, equitable access to a range of health services remains a challenge in many contexts. ChildFund’s approach involves working closely with local partners to develop sustainable and effective health services to reach the most vulnerable women, children, and families. In Senegal, ChildFund works with local and international partners to strengthen primary health care throughout the country. Health huts are a cornerstone of the project; these small community-based “facilities” are owned and managed by communities themselves, with support from and linkages to the national health system. In Honduras, ChildFund recently completed a project aimed at strengthening community health units (called UCOS), which were locally managed by communities, staffed by community health volunteers, and sustained through a revolving drug fund. The project also developed an innovative community-based quality improvement approach to improve service quality and overall sustainability.
