The intensity of debate over vertical approach versus horizontal approach to global health promotion has intensified lately.  International organizations and donors have been criticized for supporting vertical programs and by design contributing to inequities in efforts and outcomes on specific global health issues.  The World Health Organization has advocated for a horizontal approach that focuses on all the activities that enhance global health. The systems approach presented here makes a case for bringing together both health and non-health sectors to synergize their efforts for better outcomes in global health. The necessity, urgency, and benefits of such an action at macro level are identified and discussed.  Furthermore, the need to view health as public good and within the human rights framework is demonstrated with appropriate examples.
