Bryan Buckley, MPH , Keystone Center for Patient Safety & Quality, Michigan Health & Hospital Association Patient Safety Organization, Okemos, MI
In 1998 Michigan began a state-specific accreditation process. This long-standing collaborative effort involves the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI), the State of Michigan Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development, Community Health and Environmental Quality, the Michigan Association of Local Public Health (MALPH) and Michigan’s local health departments. To build upon the success with the Michigan-specific accreditation process, the Michigan Department of Community Health (state health department) supports local and tribal readiness to participate in national accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board Program (PHAB). The Michigan Public Health Association (MPHA) worked collaboratively with the project partners to offer free peer-to-peer sharing through live/recorded webinars, to all interested Michigan local health departments and other constituents.  These activities included three peer-led discussions on the benefits of and lessons learned from those participating in national accreditation. Each hour long webinar, including the following topics: PHAB Accreditation Prerequisites; Quality Improvement and Performance Management; and Workforce Development. As many local health departments plan to participate in PHAB in the next four years, we concurrently viewed this utility as a mechanism to further build capacity and also in developing a portal for mentorship of best practices for those seeking national accreditation in the future. These activities will establish a replicable process by which education, materials and resources can be shared among local health departments related to the national accreditation process across the nation.
