Deaths from drug overdose steadily increased over the past two decades and are the leading cause of injury death in the U.S.  Among 25 to 64 year-olds, drug overdose causes more deaths than motor vehicle traffic crashes. Of the 22,134 deaths relating to prescription drug overdose in 2010, 75% involved opioid analgesics. Description: Federal partners play an important role in supporting state action to address prescription drug misuse and abuse.   The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will highlight current data and evidence based recommendations for states and local partners to use to address the opioid epidemic across the nation.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have been the Division Director, of the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention, within the National Center of Injury Prevention and Control, since 2008. The division is dedicated to reducing the number and severity of unintentional injuries through science-based programs and applied research. Additionally, I am an adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education for the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.
