Amy Hagopian, PhD, MPH , Health Alliance International, University of Washington, Seattle, WA
The Lancet Palestinian Health Alliance represents a five-year effort organized by The Lancet, one of the world’s most prominent and respected medical journals. The Alliance has conducted four scientific conferences on the issues involved in health in the occupied Palestinian territory, and in 2009 published a series of five reports that cited more than 500 references and involved 37 international researchers, 19 of them based in occupied Palestine. To maintain the momentum of the collaboration, The Lancet Palestinian Health Alliance (LPHA) was established. The Lancet has continued to show leadership in this area, in part by publishing a series of letters in the summer of 2014 calling attention to the health effects of Israel’s most recent invasion of Gaza. We will discuss the role of academic researchers and publishers in calling attention to health issues in Palestine.
