The National Healthy Start Association (NHSA) is committed to improving birth outcomes and health disparities that exist within communities of color throughout the United States. With over 100 Healthy Start projects situated across the United States, the Association works to expand the capacity of community-based MCH programs and infant mortality preventive health services, thereby ensuring that all families have access to a continuum of affordable quality health care and related services. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina the City of New Orleans mobilized public health resources for pregnant women who were socially at risk with limited resources. The City of New Orleans with the help of Healthy Start the city was able to develop disaster response plans that addressed the needs of this vulnerable population during disaster recovery.

Describe efforts to promote child/family health in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Explore the role of community and governmental needs to address the needs of vulnerable populations during disaster recovery.
