In this panel session, we will share lessons learned from the HRC’s grassroots campaigns, defeats, and victories on public health and education programs such as Welcoming Schools, The Healthcare Equality Index, the Corporate Equality Index, the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, the defeat of DOMA and the continuing fight for marriage equality nationwide. We will discuss maximizing social media, technological innovation, and millennial and nextGen engagement, and talk about building a social movement for equality so that the U.S. can “become the healthiest nation in one generation.”

Discuss best practices in coordinating an effective public health grassroots campaign. Identify the advocacy and policy tools and resources available through HRC and partner organizations. Describe successful advocacy efforts at the state and federal level from both the member and affiliate perspective. Discuss best practices in advocacy efforts related to coalition building and direct policymaker communication.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: Last year, I spearheaded a first-of-its-kind national public awareness campaign to build support for marriage equality as two historic cases reached the U.S. Supreme Court and since joining the organization have turned our organization into a media powerhouse. In 2013, I was named Public Relations Professional of the Year by PR News for doing “as much as any single person can to promote a fundamental shift in the mores of our nation.
