The profound health inequities in our communities are a predictable result of a history of flawed public policies and associated private sector economic decision making.  The poor health status among the residents of these communities will not be substantially improved by actions taken by the health sector alone.  This presentation will discuss the recently launched Alignment for Health Equity and Development (AHEAD) Initiative, whose goal is to achieve balanced portfolios of aligned investments and interventions by hospitals, public health agencies, financial institutions and businesses in targeted urban and rural communities where poverty and health inequities are concentrated.  The presentation will also highlight the opportunities presented by the passage of the ACA and associated increased transparency to support greater alignment of services, actions, and financial investments across sectors.
