As countries accelerate progress towards MDGs and make new commitments to a post-2015 sustainable development agenda, effective partnerships between governments and community and civil society actors for community led action are gaining visibility and importance.  This presentation provides an overview of the role of community oriented solutions in the current policy and program context to end preventable child and maternal deaths.  This will include the leadership role of INGO partners of USAID’s Child Survival and Health Grants Program in building evidence and program experience to advance community solutions to support USAID and government policy and ambitious goals in health. One such solution - task shifting will be highlighted (includes treatment of childhood illnesses, provision of injectable contraceptives, among others). Evidence and program experience from multiple country settings demonstrates that tasks can be shifted to lower level workers, often with low literacy, and can be an effective solution with proper support.
