Rural Lufwanyama District in Zambia’s Copperbelt is characterized by low access to health services due to distances and lack of infrastructure. To increase coverage for all children 0-59 months and strengthen continuity of care for young infants, the District Health Management Team, Save the Children and Boston University tested an innovative approach that “teams” CHWs and TBAs, supported by Neighborhood Health Committees (NHCs). The teaming approach leveraged a “new role” for TBAs to promote facility delivery and newborn care. CHW-TBA teams performed joint postnatal care home visits; problem-solved; facilitated referral of mothers, newborns and children with danger signs; and closed the gap for young infants 0-2 months. We will report on results from life-of-project operations research and a final evaluation conducted in early September 2014 (e.g., women delivering at health facilities/with skilled attendance doubled from baseline to endline; 75% of TBA-registered newborns received a postnatal care visit within 24 hours).
