American HIV/ AIDS Prevention Conundrum: Lessons Learned from Cuba
Description: Prevention strategies like Pre- Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) have shown that when used as prescribed, can provide between 39 to 84 percent protection against HIV infection.
Lessons Learned: As a matter of public health, providing comprehensive access, as in the Cuban model, to evidence based prevention strategies is critical in reducing the burden of HIV amongst medically underserved high- risk negatives.
Recommendations: Evidence based Cuban prevention strategies are worthy of consideration in the amelioration efforts of the American HIV/ AIDS pandemic despite the historical Cuban- American political context.
