Paulo Lazaro Ortiz Bulto, PhD , Cuban Project on Climate and Health, Meteorological Institute of Cuba, Havana, Cuba
As the Director of the National Environmental Agency, Gisela Alonso spearheads the country’s environmental policy, implements environmental management, and oversees the forecasts and performance of Cuban research on environmental issues. She also led development of Cuba’s environmental law, a process which also received collaboration from Tulane University. On the panel, she will share aspects of Cuba’s long range macro-level plan to understand and manage the effects of climate change. Among other elements, it addresses the need for vulnerable coastal cities to adapt to rising sea levels, increasingly intense hurricanes, and other threats to health posed by global warming. Such foresight offers an opportunity for greater US-Cuba cooperation, as she will demonstrate.
