Using South Africa as a case study, this presentation will give an overview of the burden of disease in the country, the context of public health and health system development, and explore both generic public health competencies and those additional public health competencies that are appropriate for Africa. The presentation will give the example of the MPH programme at one of the South African universities, its evolution, its current structure, achievements and challenges.
