An epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) disproportionally affects young male agricultural workers along the Pacific Coast of Mesoamerica.  Its causes remain unconfirmed, making research, interventions and policy making very challenging.  This presentation will discuss the efforts to work across academic disciplines in Costa Rica and internationally to address CKD of non-traditional origin in Mesoamerica as well as efforts to achieve effective collaboration between academia, Ministries of Health and PAHO to address this devastating epidemic.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have been a researcher in environmental and occupational health for over 10 years in the USA and Costa Rica. I coordinate the Consortium on the Epidemic of Nephropathy in Central America and Mexico (CENCAM) and the coordinator of the First International Workshop on Mesoamerican Nephropathy. In addition to research on topics related to CKDu, I serve on several government-convened working groups on CKDu in Costa Rica.
