Describes what an environmental Human Rights Impact Assessment includes, how HRIAs are developed and what public health purposes they can serve. Three case studies — one addressing a proposed aerial pesticide spray in rural Oregon, one addressing  a road shoulder herbicide spray program in New Zealand, and one addressing fracking in the UK — illustrate three different strategies for employing HRIAs to protect human health.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am emeritus Professor of Philosophy (and Bioethics), Seattle Community College, have presented numerous conference papers on human rights and environmental issues, authored an early book in the field and have two peer reviewed papers in the field this year. I have authored numerous Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs), including one on fracking in NY, one on roadside sprays in New Zealand and one on fracking in the UK co-authored with UK law professors.
