The purpose of this session is to better understand visual and narrative methods used to train health care providers to overcome their implicit bias and quick categorization of their patients. The audience will also learn how the use of an educational decision aids allow patients to review relevant educational information prior to their visit, improves patient knowledge, reduces decision conflict, improves clinical decision making, and improves patient satisfaction with care.
Session Objectives: List strategies that promote successful trans-disciplinary, community-engaged work for patient-provider communication. Describe implicit bias in healthcare and interventions to engage and shift implicit attitudes and beliefs have been neglected. Describe effective, communication in a health care setting that take into account a patient’s unique cultural, contextual, and communication preferences. Explain the use of shared decision making in the clinical setting to improve care experience.
