Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The Affordable Care Act calls for model curricula in cultural competency to be disseminated through an Internet Clearinghouse. Model curricula have been disseminated for 10 years through AAMC’s MedEdPORTAL (MEP), a free, online, peer-reviewed publication that seeks to equip healthcare professionals across the continuum with educational resources to improve patient care (https://www.mededportal.org/).
A writing workshop will be led by Ms. Hannah Kittel, MedEdPORTAL Staff Editor on how to prepare curricular products for submission to MedEdPORTAL Publications for global dissemination. The workshop goal is for participants involved in curriculum development for health professionals on diversity and culture topics (e.g., cultural competency, health disparities, minority health, health literacy, unconscious bias) to learn the value of and preparation required for successful publishing of scholarly educational materials through MEP. Workshop participants will receive an overview of the MedEdPORTAL Publications submission process, examples of accepted publications, and mentored time to prepare/revise their submissions.
Note: This is a working session. Participants are required to bring relevant curricula materials, laptop computers, and power cords. Participants will receive electronic copies of the PowerPoint slides and MEP submission materials.
Session Objectives: Discuss examples of appropriate types of materials that can be published in MedEdPORTAL Publications.
Assess (critically review) standards and criteria to meet MedEdPORTAL Publications guidelines.
Identify steps to submit an educational resource to MedEdPORTAL Publications.
Formulate (prepare) one educational material to meet MEP’s accepted criteria/standards for publication.
