Gail Brandt, BS, RD, MPH, EdD, Office of Healthy Communities, Washington State DOH, Olympia, WA
Emily Turk, MPH, School of Public Health - Community Oriented Public Health Practice Program, University of Washington, Seattle, WA
In 2014, the Washington State Department of Health - Office of Healthy Communities  staff developed a self-assessment tool to identify organizational practices needed to achieve health equity through thoughtful collaboration with community organizations. A major component of the self-assessment included interviews with 20-25 community partners to gather their experiences working with the department. Interviewees were invited to share feedback on how the department addresses health inequities and the social determinants of health.  Partners were selected based on past or current work with programs and services and aligned with strategies in the Washington State Plan for Healthy Communities. Interview questions were written aligned with the department's current strategic plan to provide specific feedback goals, objectives and strategies. Once completed, the interviews were analyzed to identify themes. Draft recommendations were presented to leadership for their consideration.

The presenters will  provide the results from the assessment, share the process, lessons learned, and provide recommendations for health departments to effectively collaborate with partners in health equity work.
