Since the licensure of the first HPV vaccine in 2006, utilization has remained low compared to other adolescent vaccines in the United States and in Wisconsin. Based on data from the Wisconsin Immunization Registry, male and female HPV vaccine coverage in WI is far less than for other vaccines administered to adolescents (34% of females and 11% of males completed the 3 dose series). The Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (WI CCC Program) at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center was awarded a one year grant from the National Cancer Institute to work within the University and statewide on improving HPV vaccine utilization. The WI CCC Program is conducting an environmental scan, including local HPV immunization data analysis; a Stakeholder Survey; a comprehensive assessment of University of WI HPV-related research, including information on the evaluation of a provider education series on HPV vaccine. All of these components will be included in a report summarizing the current work and future opportunities for improving HPV vaccination uptake. The WI CCC Program has established a group of key partners that includes members of health systems, local and statewide immunization groups, pharmacy, health insurance and public health professionals. These activities will enhance collaboration and maximize cross-sector HPV vaccination intervention efforts in Wisconsin.
